Flu Vaccine for Children - Reminder

Vision has become aware that a number of children under 2 years of age have been recorded as having been given a nasal flu vaccination, which is inappropriate and unlicensed for children in this age group and may be associated with harm.

Children should only get a nasal flu vaccine as a routine measure if they are 2 years old. Children under the age of 2 are only eligible to receive the flu vaccine if they are identified as in a high-risk group for flu where they should have the injection not the nasal version. Vision is highlighting this to users as a duty of care to remind of the responsibilities of the Clinician administering the medication to check eligibility and choose the correct vaccine and method of administering.
